The 2016-2017 racing season marks the sixth year of competitive racing for the Breakaway Siberians sled dog team.

Once again, the racing team has continued to grow, and this year the team will run with at least thirteen regulars on the sled dog team.

Surprisingly, there was never a plan to have a sled dog team (especially here in St. Louis!) until a runaway Siberian Husky found Richie (on rollerblades) and Koivu while they were out for a run. Koivu and the runaway husky pulled Richie back to his car and he was immediately hooked.

With no mentors, Richie and Leah assembled a six dog team with two borrowed dogs. Richie and Leah began training the team while they were pulled around various bike trails while wearing rollerblades. In February of 2012, Richie completed his first race, the Jack Pine 30 & the Breakaway Kennels sled dog team has been growing ever since!

We try to only adopt dogs that we feel would have a difficult time adjusting to a regular dog life. By doing so, our goal is to give each dog a balance of exercise and personal attention on a daily basis. During the winter months, this is easy, as the team spends most days at our sponsor’s Murphy Animal Hospital doggie daycare program. The team also travels around to various trails in the St. Louis metropolitan area for long training runs to satisfy each dogs exercising needs. In the summer our dogs continue to attend doggie daycare where they keep up with all of their socialization and exercise needs!

During the offseason of 2016 Alpine Outfitters became the official equipment sponsor of the Breakaway Siberians sled dog team.  The team has been wearing Alpine gear for over 4 years and they are thrilled to have them as a part of their team.
Diamond Pet Foods became the official food sponsor in December of 2016.  The Breakaway Siberians have been eating the food for over 2 seasons.  Diamond was the top choice of food for the team and to be officially sponsored by them has been a dream come true.  All the pups are happy and have full bellies thanks Diamond’s help and support!
